Endocrine Disruptors in Toys

Endocrine Disruptors in Toys

The current Christmas season brings many new toys into households—and with them, chemical risks come into sharper focus. Media and scientific sources in Germany have recently warned about chemical contaminants in toys, particularly endocrine disruptors (EDCs). It is therefore crucial for manufacturers, importers, and brands to systematically test the safety of their products.

What Are Endocrine Disruptors?

Endocrine disruptors are substances that can interfere with the functioning of the hormonal system. They act by:

  • Mimicking natural hormones
  • Blocking hormone receptors
  • Altering hormonal feedback and control mechanisms

Relevant substance groups include:

  • Phthalates (plasticisers used in plastics)
  • Bisphenols (BPA, BPS, BPF)
  • Brominated flame retardants
  • PFAS (per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances)
  • Pesticide residues

These substances can be present in plastics, textiles, paints, varnishes and foams.

What Are the Risks?

EDCs can have adverse health effects, particularly during sensitive developmental stages. Potential risks include:

  • Impaired growth and development
  • Metabolic changes
  • Impairment of fertility and reproduction
  • Thyroid and other hormonal disorders
  • Long-term developmental effects and chronic health issues

Where Can These Substances Occur?

EDCs may be found in a wide range of toys and children’s products, such as:

  • Plastic toys
  • Textiles, including clothing and blankets
  • Foam products
  • Electronic toys

Exposure can occur through skin contact or accidental ingestion.

Our GALAB SOI Program

GALAB Laboratories offers the SOI (Substances of Interest) programme to identify risks at an early stage. The programme includes comprehensive analyses of relevant substance groups and parameters.

Through these analyses, we support our customers in targeted testing of their products for EDCs and in meeting applicable regulatory requirements.

Conclusion

Endocrine disruptors in toys pose a serious risk. Manufacturers and brands that have their products analysed through GALAB’s SOI programme can identify potential risks at an early stage, ensure product quality and strengthen the trust of their business partners.
