Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Contaminations of foods with PAH may occur during smoking or during heating or drying processes if incineration residues come into direct contact with food. Besides fish and fish products may be contaminated with PAH due to environmental pollution. Therefore the EU has issued maximum limits for PAH in food in its EU contaminants regulation 1881/2006. Benzo[a]pyrene can be used as a marker substance for the occurrence of carcinogenic PAH in food according to the opinion of the Scientific Committee for Food (SCF). A maximum limit of 1 µg/kg for Benzo[a]pyrene in baby food was issued, for example.

The EU has listed further PAH extending the typical scope of the American Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). We offer analysis according to the EPA scope with 16 PAH and the extended EU/EPA scope with 24 PAH. Our methods achieve limits of detection which are up to 10 times lower than EU maximum limits. This offers you a safe freedom of action for the qualification of your raw material.
