Our body needs vitamins
Our body needs vitamins for its vital functions. Most vitamins are essential and have to be supplied by our diet. An exception is vitamin D which is produced by the body if sufficient light is available.
The daily requirement of vitamins can be covered with a balanced diet. If foods are enriched with vitamins they are subject to the German labelling regulation NKV and have to be declared. The same applies to food supplements.

Vitamin D
Vitamin D is a collective term for several fat-soluble compounds. The most important forms include ergocalciferol (vitamin D2), cholecalciferol (vitamin D3), and calcidiol. Among other functions, it contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and normal calcium metabolism.
The human body can synthesize vitamin D3 in the skin when exposed to sunlight. Natural dietary sources of vitamin D include mainly fatty fish, as well as egg yolk, liver, dairy products, and certain mushrooms. Vitamin D determination is particularly relevant in infant and follow-on formula, food supplements, and foods with a declared vitamin D content.
Both insufficient and excessive intake can have health implications. In addition, legally defined minimum and maximum levels apply to infant formula.
GALAB determines vitamin D2, vitamin D3, and calcidiol in products including infant formula, dairy products, fats and oils, fish, meat, and food supplements. We take into account the current vitamin conversion tables published by the GDCh. Sample preparation is based on DIN EN 12821:2009-08, while analysis is performed using LC-MS/MS, with a limit of quantification of 0.05 µg/100 g.
