Theophylline
What is theophylline?
Theophylline is a naturally occurring alkaloid that belongs to the methylxanthine group. It is present in small quantities in black and green tea, and is structurally similar to caffeine and theobromine. Due to its bronchodilatory properties, it has pharmacological effects and is used as an active pharmaceutical ingredient.
Where is theophylline relevant?
In foods, theophylline is usually present only in low concentrations. Testing is particularly relevant for:
- Tea and tea beverages
- Tea and plant extracts
- Food supplements
- Products at the borderline between foods and medicinal products
Why is the determination of theophylline important?
Due to its pharmacological effects, higher levels of theophylline may be relevant from a health perspective. In addition, the presence and concentration of a pharmacologically active substance may play a role in the regulatory assessment of a product.
