Elements / Heavy Metals

Hard to Digest
The elements lead, cadmium and mercury are introduced as contaminants into food mainly by industrial processes. These heavy metals are considered hazardous and toxic. The Scientific Committee on Food (SCF) recommends to keep their content in food as low as possible. The European contaminants regulation 1881/2006 issues maximum limits which are not hazardous to protect consumers.

Mercury and Methyl Mercury
Especially rivers and the sea show a contamination with mercury from the environment. As a result, foods such as fish and seafood accumulate mercury mainly in the more toxic form as methyl mercury. With our long experience in analysis of elements we support you in the assessment of the safety of your products.

Minerals and Trace Elements
Many elements, even some heavy metals, are essential for the human body in small amounts. Whether quantity or trace elements – they are excreted daily and have therefore to be supplied with nutrition. It depends on the quality of food here. Even to detect falsifications, e.g. in fruit juices the elements are important identity parameters.

Analysis
Determination of the different elements at GALAB is carried out using ICP-MS after microwave digestion. Thus, very sensitive limits of detection are achieved. With this multi element screening the determination of many elements is achieved within one method. We determine quality and contamination parameters for you from A like aluminium to Z like zinc. By coupling ICP-MS and ion chromatography speciation of arsenic is feasible.
