Fast in situ Analysis for Mercury contaminated Sites

Introduction
Until now sampling and subsequent analysis was necessary for the characterization of sites which are contaminated with mercury. With the new screening procedure the concentration of mercury in soil air is specified in a grid pattern thus making it possible to determine main contamination. The screening procedure developed by GALAB in co-operation with the GKKS research center uses the moisture of the mercury and many of its compounds. This procedure works with a soil probe which is coupled online with a mercury specific detektor.

With this detektor it is possible to achieve data already a few minutes after sampling, so the results can optimize the sampling strategy.

In situ sampling and analysis. Only few minutes later data are available

With this screening procedure 6 areas in Germany where mercury was suspected to be were analyzed with success by now. Results are summarized in Proc. of the 1st International Conference "Field Screening Europe", Karlsruhe, Sept. 29-Oct.1 1997.
